Re: Zen 2006

We speak of falsehood as completely false
And of truth as completely true;
But outside of truth there is no falsehood
And outside of falsehood there is no truth.
How can those who practice the Way
Diligently search for the truth?
If we examine our own hearts,
There is delusion, there is truth.

Our lives are lived in intense and anxious struggle, in a swirl of speed and aggression, in competing, grasping, possessing, and achieving, forever burdening ourselves with extraneous activities and preoccupations.

Simplifying our lives does not mean sinking into idleness, but on the contrary, getting rid of the most subtle aspect of laziness: the one which makes us take on thousands of less important activities.

Re: Zen 2006

Three men happened to notice a fourth standing at the crest of a high hill and wondered what he was doing there. The first man said, “He must have lost his favorite animal.” The second said, “No, he must be looking for his friend.” The third said, “He is just enjoying the cool air up there.” The three continued discussing and arguing until they reached the man on the hill. The first greeted the man and said, “O friend, have you lost your pet animal?” “No, sir,” answered the man, “I’ve not lost any.” The second then asked if the man was looking for his friend, and again the man said no. The third asked if the man was there enjoying the breeze. Again, he said no. Finally the three said, “What, then, are you standing here for?”

“I just stand,” said the man.

The entire brotherhood was engaged in farming one afternoon when, the moment the dinner bell rang, one monk instantly raised his spade, gave out a hearty laugh, and went off. The master, Hui-hai, remarked: “What an intelligent fellow! This is the way to enter the Kwannon gate of truth.”

When he returned to the monastery he asked for the monk and said, “What was the truth you saw a while ago when you heard the bell?”

“Nothing much, Master. As I heard the dinner bell, I went back and had my meal.”

This time it was the master who gave the hearty laugh.

Re: Zen 2006

A mystical experience is not any more unique than a modern experiment in physics. On the other hand, it is not less sophisticated, either. . . . The complexity and efficiency of the physicist’s technical apparatus is matched, if not surpassed, by that of the mystic’s consciousness. . . . A page from a journal of modern experimental physics will be as mysterious to the uninitiated as a Tibetan mandala. Both are records of inquiries into the nature of the universe.

Re: Zen 2006

Consider a three-story building. The first floor is where we usually live. The second floor is the level of kensho, or enlightenment. The third floor is the domain to which Dōgen summons us, and to reach it, obviously, you have to go by way of the second. But some people quit at the second floor, mistakenly believing they’ve arrived at the roof. And also let me remind you that above the roof lie boundless skies. Thus, the reality of our practice is that we must clarify ourselves endlessly.

Re: Zen 2006

The monk Fu was standing in front of the storehouse when another monk came by and remarked: “It is said that wherever your eye may turn, there you discover the Tao. What does this mean?”

Fu kicked a dog which happened to be there, and the dog yelped and scooted away. The monk made no response.

“Poor dog,” said Fu, “you were kicked in vain.”

Want to know how to catch a mouse?
Don’t try to learn from a pampered cat.
To know the nature of the world,
Don’t study fine-bound books.

Re: Zen 2006

Those who understand the Tao delight, like cats, in just sitting and watching without any goal or result in mind. But when a cat gets tired of sitting, it gets up and goes for a walk or hunts mice. It does not punish itself or compete with other cats in an endurance test as to how long it can remain immovable—unless there is some real reason for being still, such as catching a bird.
