Re: Zen 2006

The study is that there is nothing to study. The way is that there is nothing to be a way. Since there is nothing to study, there is no clinging. Since there is nothing to be a way, there is no following. If one idly slips and says the word “Buddha,” one must simply wash out one’s mouth for three years—only then can one be called a real student of the way.

All things by immortal power,

When we talk about understanding, surely it takes place only when the mind listens completely—the mind being your heart, your nerves, your ears—when you give your whole attention to it.

The Dharma, incomparably profound and
minutely subtle,
Is rarely encountered, even in hundreds
of thousands of millions of kalpas.
Now we can see it, listen to it, accept and
hold it—
May we completely realize the Buddha’s
true meaning.

Re: Zen 2006

A monk asked T’ou-tzu: “All sounds are the sounds of Buddha, right?”

“Right,” said T’ou-tzu.

The monk said: “Then master, doesn’t your bottom make farting sounds?”

T’ou-tzu hit him. But undaunted the monk continued, “Whether talk is coarse or subtle, all returns to the primary meaning, right or wrong?”

“Right,” T’ou-tzu said.

The monk said: “Then can I call you a donkey?”

T’ou-tzu hit him again.

After newly arriving at the monastery, Ching-ch’ing asked Hsuan-sha: “Please point out the entry to the teaching.”

Hsuan-sha said: “Do you hear the sound of the water in the drainage ditch?”

“Yes, I hear it,” Ching-ch’ing said.

“Enter there.”

Hearing these words, Ching-ch’ing was enlightened.

Re: Zen 2006

A man met a lad weeping. “What do you weep for?” he asked.

“I am weeping for my sins,” said the lad.

“You must have little to do,” said the man.

The next day they met again. Once more the lad was weeping. “Why do you weep now?” asked the man.

“I am weeping because I have nothing to eat,” said the lad.

“I thought it would come to that,” said the man.

Kuei-tsung entered the hall and addressed the monks: “I want to speak about Zen. All of you, gather round.”

The monks did so. The Master went on: “Consider Kuan-yin’s practice.”

A monk asked: “What is Kuan-yin’s practice?”

Kuei-tsung snapped his fingers. “Do all of you hear that?”

“We hear it,” the monks said.

“What is this pack of fools looking for here?” shouted the master, scattering the monks with his staff. Laughing, he returned to his quarters.

Plucking chrysanthemums along the east fence;
Gazing in silence at the Southern Hills,
The birds flying home in pairs
Through the soft mountain air of dusk—
In these things there is a deep meaning
But when we try to express it,

In my middle years I became fond of the Way
And made my home in the foothills of South Mountain.
When the spirit moves me I go off by myself
To see things that I alone must see.
I follow the stream to the source,
And sitting there, watch for the moment
When clouds rise up. Or I may meet a woodsman;
We talk and laugh and forget about going home.

You say that my poems are poetry. Well they are not, and until you understand why they are not, you won’t see their poetry.

Re: Zen 2006

There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is rapture in the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music is its roar.
I love not man the less, but nature more.

Lord Byron
